The renovation of London Bridge station has won two awards at this year’s prestigious British Construction Industry Awards. Winning Transport Project of the Year and the distinguished ICE200 award, its victory gives important recognition to the project’s innovation and all of the impressive teams involved in the demanding, six-year construction.
SAS International, the leading manufacturer of acoustic ceiling solutions, cladding systems and architectural metalwork, worked in partnership with, Grimshaw Architects and main contractor, Costain, on one of the city’s most anticipated builds. SAS International is proud to have designed, manufactured and installed a range of metalwork packages for such a high-profile, transformative project.
Speaking on the project’s success, James Elford, Project Director, noted: ‘The collaboration between the key delivery partners along with a wide range of stakeholders and supply chain teams has been absolutely instrumental to the success of the project and I am pleased so many were able to share the accolade at the awards ceremony.’
Not only was the London Bridge project awarded for its ability to improve the daily travel experiences of its commuters, it was selected for its unique engineering, particularly its use of off-site manufacturing.
Panelist Rachel Skinner, ICE Vice President, said: ‘The transformation of the station is a masterclass in creative and innovative engineering, blending the old with the new in a way that reflects the project’s functional and aesthetic heritage while also looking ahead to cater for future need.’
With creative engineering at the heart of the project, it was crucial that the design met the aesthetic and practical demands outlined by the client. SAS International was called upon for its expert anodised architectural metal work which was installed in the main entrance. Brushed stainless steel panels provided a resilient cladding shell to the escalators and shop fronts, along with PPC aluminum cladding to the stairs.
A major contract managed by SAS International’s Special Projects Division, the London Bridge station renovation features highly specialist design-led installations devised by SAS International. This one-stop solution covers all aspects of project delivery, ensuring the station will stand the test of time.
A key element of the Thameslink programme, the London Bridge Station project signifies the extent in which innovative infrastructure can influence businesses and local communities, radically improving the day-to-day operation of London’s bustling metropolis.
