SAS reaches new heights with Dublin Airport’s Visual Control Tower, Ireland’s tallest occupied structure
Dublin Airport, one of Europe’s fastest-growing travel hubs has the future in sight with the construction of its new visual control tower to help with airspace management and traffic flow. This 87.7m tall tower, a commanding new addition to Dublin’s skyline, has now been fitted with contemporary ceilings from SAS International.
Requiring a bespoke product that would mimic the diminishing octagonal shape of the building as it climbs, SAS used SAS200 and SAS330 as the base shapes, and created specialised hybrid trapezoidal panels for the task.
SAS200 is one of the most adaptable systems from SAS, ideal for bespoke applications. Modules can be manufactured in a variety of ways depending on application, with the shape and size of tiles only limited by the inherent material properties. Each module includes a 3mm hidden gasket to aid installation, forming a shadow gap that improves uniformity and overall aesthetic appeal.
SAS330 forms part of the premium SAS offering, with a host of value-added design elements. A profile suspended ceiling, the system is available in a tartan or linear grid form, suitable for any building module. Ceiling tiles can be of any shape, in lengths of up to 3 metres. The design flexibility of SAS330 allows for complete void access and total service and lighting integration.
These panels were installed in the control tower operation room, while SAS150 features in the administration and meeting rooms, offering a secure, easily maintained ceiling with convenient, hinge down access to the void. Ceiling tiles pivot and slide within the grid, minimising damage risk during maintenance as they hang out of harm’s way. They are ideally suited to areas requiring frequent maintenance, or zones with high footfall.
The tower is a key element in complex, high-traffic airports and was designed to offer clear sight lines of all current—and future—runways. Arup carried out the civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, as well as provided environmental, lighting and façade consultancy services.
Cathal McGuinness, Sales Director at SAS comments: “SAS was selected for this project for its ability to offer bespoke design solutions, as well as distinct quality of product. Furthermore, from our central Dublin office, we were able to stay in close contact with those on site. All design personnel were local and able to provide advice straight away if needed.”
The installation was completed in the Autumn of 2019.
